CHARACTER INFORMATION
NAME: Lin Pu "Katt" Chuan aka. Lao Hu
CANON: Breath of Fire 2
CANON REFERENCE: For Katt and Breath of Fire II
AGE: 15
GENDER: Female
YEAR IN SCHOOL High School 1

APPEARANCE: Visual!

Katt is of a small, lithe build. She is 5’1” tall, but weighs about 160 lbs. She has shockingly red hair that is cut short and piercing green eyes that are silted like a cat. But by far the most noticeable characteristic are her cat-like features. While most of her upper-body looks like that of a regular human's (though slightly orange in tint and with a few stripes running across her cheeks), her lower half is fur-covered and striped, like a tiger’s. Her feet are thin and clawed, making all shoes that are not open-toed painful to wear. She also does not like to wear legwear, as she finds it uncomfortable and restricting. Her hands are also similarly clawed like her feet, but are more human-like and dextrous. Finally, her ears are cat-like as well, and she’s able of repositioning them much like a cat is able to do so. Her usual outfit consists of open-toed boots, a pair of gloves and a bodice to cover her top.

PERSONALITY: In many ways, Katt embodies her namesake. The best way to describe her personality would probably as similar to that of a cat, a tiger, and a 15-year-old girl.

Like the more benign version of her namesake, Katt is like a cat in her curiosity and finicky nature. Though she would be quick to deny it, she is naively unaware and inquisitive of the many things that there are to see in the world. Whenever she comes across something that she has never seen before, she could stare at this shiny new object for hours trying to understand how it moves and operates. However, much like a juvenile feline, she quickly loses interest. She’s very rarely interested in something long enough to fully understand how it functions, much to her discredit. This makes her seem a bit scattered-brained, and given the choice she would much rather leave the heavy thinking to somebody else. This is not to say that she’s stupid—though she believes that she is. She's clever in her own way, but when it comes to academic or educational pursuits, she has a rather pronounced learning disorder. Also like a cat, she also has a natural affection for people, or more accurately people she knows she can trust. However, a long history of being ostracized and distrusted by human society has made her naturally tentative of others. Once she believes she can trust them she will devote her full loyalty and faith into that person.

However, within her heart is also the spirit of the tiger, and it is a fierce and ferocious aspect of her personality. While she is amiable and outgoing most of the time, once spurned she is a force to be reckoned with. She has the full confidence of a predator chasing after its prey and has no qualms about attacking anything that makes her mad. Her ferocity and tenacity in battle and in the wilds has made her something of an urban legend back home. She is fully confident of her physical abilities and capacity to fight. She will not back down from a fight nor will she suffer any insult. This confidence sometimes borders on recklessness, as she has been known to challenge other creatures and animals many, many times her own size and weight. However, she is a natural-born genius in combat and will powerfully and brutally tear things apart with her clawed hands or with a stick. She is quite proud of this ability and constantly challenges herself to try something new and to test her limits.

Yet in spite all this animal analogy, she is also still a 15-year-old girl. She is somewhat outgoing and sociable around people she trusts, and is always willing to speak her mind and defend those she is loyal to. She loves being a part of a group, though she normally feels a little awkward and out of place in larger crowds. She is also cheeky and smart-alecky, though often she doesn’t realize she’s doing it. She’s a bit guileless and blunt, having pretty much no brain-to-mouth filter. While mostly happy and excited about the possibilities around her, when given time to pause and think she would say for certain that she would like to feel a family to which she can belong to and contribute for. This is an ideal which drives her, but her cynicism believes it is also the stuff of children’s stories and is not anything that she would ever be able to find in the “real” world.

For you see, in spite of her fiery temper and confidence, there’s also a part of her that is quiet and shy when she becomes uncertain for whatever reason. This part of her has been clouded by skepticism born out of years of being alienated by society. She struggles to believe in hopes and dreams, or that love at first sight exists… especially for her. When she feels particularly awkward or stupid, she’ll stumble over her own words and give herself verbal backhands once a tactless utterance that has been said. Having lived as an outsider for most of her early life, she and has a rather low opinion of herself as a human being. In fact she is very insecure in a lot of ways: she doesn’t believe herself to be really worthy of social contact with other people, learning early that her mutation was something that separated herself from everybody else. She also doesn’t believe herself to be very attractive, and constantly notice her own shortcomings relative to other people. She also is confident in her assertion that she is stupid, and has no major motivation to improve herself mentally.

And yet a part of her also could never fully let go of the hope that there is something better for her, and that she was meant for something more. Now all she needs to do is find out what that something is.

POWERS/ABILITIES: Katt's mutation naturally occurs due to her tiger-like abilities: sensitive hearing, eyes that can see in the dark and a heightened sense of smell. She’s also fiercely powerful despite her small frame due to an exceptionally dense muscle-mass. Her fiercest blows hit like miniature explosions -- she is able to crush boulders with a single blow of a well-made stick. She is also able to strike down and drag things many times her own weight (such as sambar deer – indigenous herbivores that can weigh as much as 700 lbs.) She is also incredibly nimble and agile, and is able to quickly propel herself over most obstacles or avoid attacks. She would have little trouble jumping and climbing her way to the top of Xavier institute if she were so inclined (and the fact that she likes chilling out in high places will probably make this a common sight).

Her greater physical prowess comes at a cost, however. Unlike somebody like Wolverine or Sabertooth, Katt does not possess an increased healing factor, making her very much a glass cannon. The more she exerts herself, the more she needs to recover her energy and repair muscle damage. She simply does not have the stamina to push the upper limits of her abilities for very long. In addition, her massive strength also does not translate into increased durability -- she's just as frail as anybody else her age. When she attacks, most of the resisting force of her blows gets distributed vertically through her lower back, arms and legs. She needs to have her jumps or attacks land as she expects them to or else she’s going to become seriously injured, even from her own strikes. Therefore, it’s important for her to use her agility to avoid blows, strike quickly and use immense force because the longer her fights take, the worse Katt will be in the long run.

Over time, she may be able to even further increase her physical power beyond her current limits. However, this will not mean much if she doesn’t manage to find a way to increase her stamina and endurance as wewll. She may also have more growing up to do…

She’s also multilingual, able to speak conversational Standard Zhuang, Standard Chinese and English. However, educational pursuits are still her bane and she barely knows how to read and write in Standard Chinese and English.

AU HISTORY: Katt was born Lin Pu Chuan in a small village in China’s Guangxi region. She was one of those rare mutants that are born looking different – with stripes covering her face, long ears and a cat-like tail. The talk of the village was that she was a reincarnation of the Lao Hu (tigers) that once populated that region, and therefore a spirit of the wilds. At first, her family tried to raise her as their own daugther, but as she began get older her fur became to grow in and she started to become more feral. Her parents were forced to concede that she was more beast than child and took her to the woods to live where nature had intended. Katt doesn’t remember much of her family, with only her name as her sole memento of this early part of her life.

Katt took to the wilds quickly, in spite of her young age. She was born with natural instincts to fight and a keen eyes of a predator. Within the two years that she lived on her own tales of the spirit of Lao Hu began to circulate around the villages in the area: a tiger that took on human form. Over time, some villagers would bring offerings to the “spirit,” which Katt was more than happy to indulge. Her natural curiosity began to seize her and she would visit the outskirts of villages to look in on the life that she was once a part of. The villagers themselves found her a natural curiosity, and would cheer in delight whenever she was caught bringing down a wild boar or other indigenous animals. Katt started to make a sport of this, and would constantly seek out bigger and more dangerous things for her to impress her audience.

After a time, Katt’s courage became sufficient to begin to explore the outskirts of the villages she came to recognize. The villagers were at first cautious of her, but came to believe that she was a sign of good fortune to the village and would shower her with gifts. They would also try to talk to her, and since she had developed some basic conversational skills with her family she learned how to reply back. For a time, this was a happy period in Katt’s life. Though she was still not a part of the people, she was accepted and could come to see them whenever she wished.

All of this changed the time that one of the more rambunctious boys tugged on her tail. She demanded that he stop, which only lead to other boys to do the same. As more and more began to pick on her, she lost her temper and began beating up the children that had gathered around her with her claws and fists before running away into the wilds to treat her own injuries. Though none of the children were killed, many suffered lost teeth, broken ribs and one had his jaw dislocated. By the time she recovered from her assault, the villagers had become wary of her. The party was over.

Unfortunately as she had begun to develop her relations with people, she also started to develop a reliance on them when her hunting of game in the wild wasn’t going so well. Without this source of food as a supplement to days of bad hunting, Katt began to poke around houses and food stores. This, in addition to the increased caution not to make her angry, caused her to be viewed as a nuisance to the villagers. Katt quickly discovered that while she could ward off a few of the adults on her own, fighting back only made people mad and caused future visits to be more strained. She learned to run away, to be cautious and not draw attention to herself. But it was only a matter of time before she was going to get caught, and caught she did. For several months she was locked up – first in a wooden cage, and then in one of metal after she broke out of the first one. The villagers didn’t want to kill her, however, as she was still viewed as Lao Hu and didn’t want to evoke her spiritual wrath. Instead they kept her locked up and did little more than feed her, causing Katt to fall into a deep sense of helplessness and despair.

After a few months of being confined to a cage, she truly believed that this was the life that she would live forever. Just when she started to accept her fate did a group of missionaries from the diocese of St. Eva came to the village Katt was confined in. One of their order, Sister Margarie Smith, saw the conditions Katt was living in and was horrified. “What are you doing to this girl? Can’t you see she is just a child??” She demanded to know. Katt looked up at the woman, pleading on her behalf. Though the villagers explained that she was Lao Hu – a beast in human form – Sister Margarie was unmoved. She approached her Mother Superior and requested that they take the girl with her their convent. Though the Mother Superior had a cautionary eye of the mutant, she agreed that none of God’s creatures deserved to be treated that way and they approached the village elder for her release. Katt was moved to tears. The entire trip to the convent, she clinged desperately to the robes of her salvation: Sister Margarie, her truest friend.

Katt spent the last years of her childhood and early part of her adolescents at the Covent of St. Eva. She was there Sister Margarie would watch over her while the other nuns tended to her education. Katt was utterly devoted to the nun who saved her. Sister Margarie even gave Katt the nickname “Cat” with how she would sneak out of her room at night and curl up at the foot of the Sister's bed (the misspelling of Katt was from the first time she actually tried to spell her own nickname). But as she began to get older, Katt’s wild nature began to creep in again. Though she tried with all of her might, Katt’s focus and concentration was just never enough to seriously focus on religious texts and practices. Sister Margarie understood – Katt told her all about her life before the monastery, but the other nuns were beginning to worry that they had truly brought a tiger into the convent and started treating Katt as the would a wild animal. Knowing that Katt couldn’t stay there forever, Sister Margerie contacted Xavier’s institute in order for her to find a home and a place where people would understand her. Realizing her past and issues with loss was going to be severe, Xavier himself came to visit the wild cat-girl to introduce the school to her. Though it was a tough decision, Xavier’s nurturance and Sister Margarie’s insistence that she should be with people that would understand her (and move away from the nuns that were starting to yell at her) finally drew Katt to the school… where she hoped she would find the thing she never had: a place where everybody understood her.
